Kitchen update

The kitchen is almost finished! It's been nearly 6 months in progress. What a pain.

It doesn't help that my husband works full time and it's been pretty much all DIY.

He and his friend, Doug were able to finally get started on the concrete countertops. We built the mold and poured them in place. The color became more of a flesh color and we then used an acid stain to change the color.

We built foundations.

Then we mixed and stirred. I'd like to add the color was my husband's choice.  We had originally chosen a charcoal color, but he decided to pick more of a brown.

Then we poured.

Then this fleshy colored appeared.

I should add our new sink was installed prior to and I love it!

Then we sanded and polished to smooth out the counters. It brought out a lot of the aggregate.

Since we didn't like the flesh color, we decided to order an acid stain in ebony.  LOVE IT!

As far as counters are concerned, it just needs sealer and a polisher.

We still need to do the backsplash, install the microwave and do some other small finishing touches.

What a whirlwind of awesomeness. We got married, had a baby, Jonjon the Nissan died, the kitchen flooded and that has been the latter part of my year.

Wedding was in June and it was wonderful.

Then we had a beautiful little boy in October. He couldn't wait to meet us and showed up 3 weeks early. He really is a good baby and has the coolest hair.

As for the house...We haven't done a lot, but here are a few updates.

Here is a good before shot of the kitchen.
Yes, that is the pantry door.
Here it is after-before the leak.
Side view of pantry.
Then there was a leak from under the sink. So we receieved some insurance money and tore it all out!

We even took out half a wall and some windows. The whole thing needed to be rearranged.

We replaced the large fluorescent light and put in 5 LED lights. We aren't finished, yet. We still need to complete the concrete counter tops, the backsplash and put in the over the stove microwave and dishwasher.

We kept the kitchen green, but went with a more Olive color- it's called Barrel.

We also painted the office and the Kid's room.

His room was a periwinkle color with a natural wood colored trim. We painted the trim white and painted it Smokey Olive.

The office was an ick color with the same trim.
I found an oops color for $7 and it was just the color I wanted.
It's a dark blue. I really like it!

And here is the boy. :)

And the master. As we mentioned previously, we ripped out the carpet and replaced the trim.
We still have a bathroom to gut. I hate it.

This was also a periwinkle color. For now, I just painted it. I know we will be gutting it, so I didn't put much effort or thought into it.

More to come. I will leave you with this.

I am in love. :)

Home sweet home!

After a month of delays, I finally got to close on my house! I love it! The location is perfect, the yard is fantastic and the school disctrict is great!

Our house

The backyard. It much more green now. :)

Since we had lost a good month of work time, We wasted no time and got started on the renovations the day we closed. The house has great bones, but really needed an update on a lot of areas.

Here is the living/dining room at move in.

Due to finances being tight and having a handy fiance, we decided to sand and refinish the floors ourselves.  While I like the finished product, just hire someone to do it. It will be worth it.

Here it is in progress...

All refinished and waiting on stain. The sanding looked great, until the stain went on. You could see the tiny errors. We aren't pros, so we think of it as "character".

We went to the local restore/habitat for humanity and found a great deal on the dark stain. "Someone" decided to not follow the instructions and didn't wipe off all the excess and in turn, caused a three DAY delay due to non-drying stain. It's funny because the stain was advertised as a "1-hour" stain, not 72 hours.

Anywho- we wanted darker floors, but they ended up a little darker than planned. I still like the color, though. It really pops with the new wall color and white trim.

This is just the stain, no finish.
The dining room

Dining room side, again. Better lighting

The big window.
I know people think tan is boring, but it was a nice neutral color that quickly covered the rooms.

Here is the master. A nice yellow color, with dingy carpet.

We removed the carpet on closing day. :)

sanded floors

Some cute guy putting on the finish

Painted walls and getting white trim installed

Ahh...
It will take some time, but we are getting there.  This house is going to be perfect for us and our little family. I am so excited watching it become "ours".
